Students will KNOW ...

Alaska Native Elders are respected culture-bearers and educators in the community.
The Southeast Tribal Values and how they connect to their lives.
How to pronounce the tribal values in Lingít.
Different types of Lingít songs and their purposes.
How to introduce and sing Lingít songs.
Permission must be given by a clan in order to sing one of its songs.

Students will UNDERSTAND that ...

Clan songs are owned by that clan and often considered at.oow, the clanʼs most prized possessions.
The background and history of a Lingít song are just as important as the song itself.
Culture is the ways of living and beliefs that are handed down from one generation to the next.
Cultural values are more difficult to observe, yet are the foundation of customs and traditions.
Lingít stories teach valuable lessons.

Students will BE ABLE to ...

Speak/sing the tribal values in Lingít using song as a memorization tool.
Recall and connect the Southeast Tribal values to their own lives and to traditional Lingít stories.
Present the background of authentic Lingít songs before singing them.
Sing a variety of Lingít songs, both traditional and contemporary.
Create a group tableaux, or frozen image, that illustrates how a tribal value can be practiced in school, home and community.
Create gestures for Lingít words to help them remember and communicate their meaning.

Performance (sung, spoken and acted): Sample assessment rubrics for Lingít language learning, singing and tableaux.
